In a letter to all BHCS families today Interim CEO Timm Funk shared a message about school safety plans to assure the school community that administration is attentive and focused on safety. He wrote the following:

"Our hearts and prayers go out to the victims and families of the Parkland Florida high school that experienced the tragic and horrific shooting this week. May God comfort the grieving families and the entire school community.

As we share their mourning, I want to reassure you of the safety measures we take at Bishop Heelan Catholic Schools. We continue to train and equip our leaders and teachers to address safety readiness. Last fall we reassessed the current state of our preventive measures
and our violent intruder practices. This included a December meeting between our leadership team and Chad Sheehan, a certified safety expert and 23-year veteran of the Sioux City Police Department.  He has conducted education sessions with our teachers, staff, students and parents over the past three years.

We also met this week with the Sioux City Police Department to review and revise our safety plans and procedures specific to the new Bishop Heelan High School. We will be updating the high school’s plans in the days and weeks ahead.

Bishop Heelan Catholic Schools and all Catholic schools in our Diocese have a facilities’ policy that requires all exterior doors be locked during regular school hours. All our schools have had safety plan education that could include safety drills. At BHCS our mobile alert system, used to communicate with parents and teachers on weather issues, is also designed to handle communication should a safety issue occur."
