The recent Heelan Auction, “Moonlight Masquerade” raised over $352,100 for Bishop Heelan Catholic Schools, exceeding the 2018 goal of $350,000. The mega fund-raiser, cancelled due to snow on a Saturday and rescheduled for Monday, April 16, still attracted nearly 540 guests to celebrate our Catholic schools.

The school system’s largest fundraiser of the year raised funds for Bishop Heelan High, Holy Cross, Mater Dei, and Sacred Heart schools. It included a Fund-a-Cause that raised over $33,000 for new science equipment at all the schools.

Moving the tuition voucher from a Live Auction gift to a raffle for a $5,000 tuition voucher brought in $17,000. Top live auction gifts were a vacation week at a home in Waterville, Ireland; a 1958 Yankees World Series Champions autographed baseball and Steamboat Springs ski trip resort.

Three home parties in Dakota Dunes, Northside and Morningside brought in $11,000. Top high bid silent auction gifts that went for $1000-$2,000 were: a John Hardy jewelry set, Dell laptop computers, a Vizio TV Certified Angus Boneless Beef Ribeye Steaks, catered Heelan graduation party, a Missouri River cruise, honorary assistant coach at Heelan’s last varsity boys basketball game in the Pit, a Riccoh printer and Midwest Alarm service for a year.

The evening once again offered something for everyone beginning with gift cards at $25 each. The items that drew the most bids were water boy for a Heelan boys basketball game, Creighton Blue Jays women’s autographed ball and El Fredo’s Pizza for a year.

Deb Harpanau, a Mater Dei and Heelan High parent, led an expanded based of parent volunteers to help solicit gifts and support, including the successful raffle, Gift Card Grab and Heads or Tails game.

Dori Sexton, a Mater Dei parent, led design of table centerpieces, the entrance and other décor. More than a dozen students volunteered at the event as well.

“We were again blessed with outstanding chair couples,” said Janet Flanagan, BHCS director of special gifts. “They generated new ideas, built items and decor, worked on BidPal tickets and seating, designed Auction materials, recruited and donated gifts and helped decorate with nearly two dozen other volunteers. They were fantastic hands-on volunteers.”

Chair couples were:  Chris ’86 and Joni Vondrak, representing Heelan High, Dan ’92 and Kari Nelson,  Holy Cross School; Tracy (Holcomb) ’88 and Andy Pomerson, Mater Dei School and Mark ’95 and Jenny (Feste ’96) Petty, Sacred Heart School students.

The 2019 Heelan Auction is tentatively set for April 6, before Easter in 2019.
