Heelan Grad Loses Life in Accident

The Bishop Heelan family is mourning the loss of 2020 grad Isaac Roerig following a fatal accident in Cedar Falls yesterday where he was attending college. Isaac is the son of Susan and Todd Roerig of Mater Dei Parish, a brother to Noah '19 and Grace, a seventh grader. Todd, boys and girls cross country coach, has served as a religion teacher for many years at Mater Dei School and recently moved to the faculty of a Bishop Heelan High School.

Heelan’s Big Give Raises $10,000 for Textbooks

Grandstand Renamed for Brendan Burchard

In a special Homecoming night surprise Brendan Burchard thought he was seeing the Memorial Field Grandstand receive a new sign invoking the Blessed Virgin Mary. Instead he learned that his longtime friends Denny ‘63 and Diana Walker made a naming gift to Heelan for the “Brendan Burchard Grandstand.”

Wright Named Head Coach Girls Basketball

Jay Wright, boys assistant basketball coach and member of the Heelan family for many years, has been named new head coach of Heelan girls basketball which won the 3A state championship last year. Wright takes over for Darron Koolstra who stepped down from coaching because of extensive travel for his job.

Heelan Senior Scores Perfect 36 on ACT

Another Heelan senior, Bernie Lopez, has earned a perfect ACT score of 36. Bernie, the son of David and Cynthia Lopez, is a percussionist in the Heelan band with classes of honors physics, AP English, AP Spanish, theology and psychology.

Epiphany Center Welcomes Dual Language Students

Textbooks Will be Heelan’s Big Give Project Oct 6

Masks and School Five Days a Week

Students will return to in-classroom learning five days a week at Bishop Heelan Catholic Schools. When all five schools start Tuesday, Aug. 25 all students, faculty and staff will be required to wear masks or face coverings upon entering school buildings and throughout the day. Face coverings will not be required during lunch, recess and other breaks where students can distance or be outdoors.

Bishop Heelan High School Chaplain Fr. Shane Deman ’99 Heelan grad, has started a weekly podcast “Outcast Catholics” with Fr. Travis Crotty, a pastor in Le Mars and chaplain of Gehlen High School to connect with those who feel the Catholic Church is no longer relevant today. In the 20-minute long show the two priests discuss questions they hear from young people and share theological perspectives and encouragement.

Heelan Auction Raises $338,000

The "Happy Days" Heelan Auction raised over $338,000 with an online virtual event and an outdoor party at Memorial Field June 25. Top gifts auctioned off were a mini golden doodle puppy and one-of-a kind, 13 ft. shuffleboard table made from the wood floor in old Heelan’s gym.

Old Heelan Coming Down

Demolition is set to start soon on the brick structure of old Bishop Heelan High School. It’s expected to take up to two weeks to raze the building, built in 1948-49. Asbestos removal has been completed and demolition crews have torn out windows and cleaned out interior debris in the past several weeks.

The "Happy Days" Heelan Auction will now take place as an outdoor event at Memorial Field Thursday, June 25 from 6:30-10 p.m. and a virtual event online at 7 p.m. at bishopheelan.org. At Memorial Field, the Cattlemen’s Association will grill burgers, the Sioux City Convention Center will provide side dishes and condiments and Bullwinkle’s Ice Cream will provide dessert. Beer, wine and liquor will be served.

Students Represent Iowa for National History Day

A Bishop Heelan High School student team was one of two selected from the state of Iowa to compete in National History Day, a virtual competition this year that is being conducted remotely June 14-20. Catholic Schools Move to Distance Learning

A Distance Learning Plan will be implemented Monday, April 6 to prepare for continued student learning in the case that the Bishop Heelan School System closure extends beyond April 12. The schools will transition from enrichment activities and review online to actual graded instruction. National Honor Society Inducts New Members

One in Five Seniors Score 30 or More on ACT

A whopping 22% of Heelan seniors have scored a 30 or higher on their ACT college prep exams, a record at Heelan in its 70-year history. The impressive scores are expected to boost Heelan’s ACT composite score report next October.

Mattress Sale Raises Funds for Heelan Music Dept

Seniors Turn Assignment into Cookie Business

Heelan seniors Ellie Ernster and Molly O’Neill of Sioux City turned a class assignment into a fun and delicious part-time business. Last December Ellie and Molly received a Heelan Journalism class assignment to create a demonstration. They chose “how to bake and decorate cookies” and worked out of Ellie’s kitchen.

Heelan Claims National Merit Semi-finalists and a Commended

Bishop Heelan High School seniors Foster Johnson, Elizabeth Meyer and Jackson Thompson have been named National Merit Semifinalists. Jaiden Utech has been named National Merit Commended scholar. The four are among the 22% of Heelan students who have scored 30 or more on ACT college entrance exams.
