"Zoom" Dinner Benefits BHCS Students

Students at Bishop Heelan Catholic Schools are receiving tuition assistance thanks to supporters of the 25th Annual Bishop’s Dinner for Catholic Schools, presented virtually by the Diocese of Sioux City on Aug. 21.

Over $100,000 total has been raised to date to benefit 16 school systems in the diocese. Of that total, 105 BHCS students received $270 each in tuition scholarship grants this school year, representing an overall benefit of $28,350 for Bishop Heelan.

All of the proceeds from the Bishop’s Dinner go into a Catholic School Foundation fund for tuition scholarships for Catholic school families.

Scores of local individuals and companies and others in Siouxland donated gifts and sponsorships for the ”zoom” event. While there was no dinner this year as a covid safety measure, supporters did receive gift packs of selected wines and coffees.

Long-time Bishop Heelan English teacher Mary Kay Augustine spoke by “zoom” to accept her Excellence in Education Award during the event, and a BHCS video with student scenes from every school played during the evening.

“We are grateful for the Diocesean support that helps families who need assistance but don’t qualify for grants from the Monsignor Lafferty Tuition Foundation,” says Dr. John Flanery, BHCS president. “Bishop Nickless and his staff are great champions of Catholic education that leads our Bishop Heelan students to a lifetime advantage.”
