The Heelan Auction "Tailgate for Heelan" held June 9 was a unique evening that attracted over 400 guests and raised over $336,000 to support Bishop Heelan Catholic Schools.

The total includes the PRIDE Blitz match challenge, school raffle and Fund-a-Cause donations for the Heelan Weight Room used by students and athletes in grades 7-12.

It was a first time the Heelan Auction has been held in the new high school. After the social hour which began outside on the Crusader Courtyard guests dined in the O’Gorman Fieldhouse   which featured sponsors and gifts on its large video board.

Dinner was served from tailgate tents honoring Iowa, Iowa State, Nebraska, Heelan, Notre Dame and other schools.

A "Crusader of the Year" award was presented to 1951 Heelan grad Larry Walsh who has supported Heelan and many other Catholic organizations in Sioux City. Walsh played a leadership role in creating the Crusader Courtyard on the school campus.

A "Distinguished Volunteer" award was presented to Sid and Linda Shoemaker '81, who have volunteered extensively for the system for many years.

The evening included mobile bidding, a Live Auction, a raffle, PRIDE Blitz and a Fund-A-Cause for the Heelan weight room used by middle school and high school students.

Guests wore their favorite team’s colors or logo wear and plan an evening of casual fun to benefit our schools.

The Heelan Auction is the only annual fundraising event that supports all Sioux City Catholic schools: Bishop Heelan High School, Holy Cross School, Sacred Heart School, Mater Dei School and the Dual Language Academy.

Auction chair couples were: Jon and Liz Determan, Rick and Becca Feauto, Jerad and Peggy Higman, Greg and Laura Topf.
