Nick McGowan, Bishop Heelan High senior, has been named "Male Youth Leader of the Year" by the Sioux City Area National Council on Youth Leadership. His selection as a top leader qualifies him to attend a major leadership conference in St. Louis Oct. 19-23.

Nick, the son of Chris and Cathleen McGowan of Sioux City, will join other youth and adult leaders at the “Town Meeting on Tomorrow” at Washington University in St. Louis. The conference offers leadership seminars and activities to nurture interactions with youth leaders of diverse backgrounds.

The Heelan senior follows his sister, Sam McGowan ’18, Noah Roerig ‘19 and a host of Heelan students who have been selected as top leaders among metro area teens by the local youth leadership council.

Nick is vice president of Heelan’s Student Council, a member of the Heelan debate team and Miracle Makers, a Knight of the Altar and captain of the varsity wrestling team.

He is mayor pro tem of the Mayor’s Youth Commission, works with Siouxland Cares and is a member of its Teen Court program. He serves as the president of his 4-H club, and is one of just six Iowans selected to attend National 4-H Conference in Washington, DC in spring and is the first from Woodbury County in over a decade. He received a Danforth Award for leadership this year.

Nick hopes to attend the United States Naval Academy after graduation.

The National Council on Youth Leadership creates public awareness of the power of youth leadership, promotes advanced leadership skills and encourages recognition of youth leaders.

Students must have a 3.0 or higher grade point average and two or more leadership roles in school, religious or community organizations during high school. Local “Youth Salute” students are recognized in their schools by Genelli Studio in Sioux City.
