Larry Walsh to be Honored at Heelan Auction

Two awards will be presented at the 2021 Heelan Auction June 9 to honor individuals who have made a difference with Bishop Heelan Catholic Schools.

The “Crusader of the Year” will be awarded to Larry Walsh, a 1951 Heelan grad before the Live Auction.

Walsh is a father, a grandfather, pioneer in his field, and an active and faithful individual who has distinguished himself in the Sioux City area Catholic community. He grew up in Cathedral Parish where his school's religious sisters guided his classroom learning.

After leaving Heelan he became a leader in the pork processing industry as a founder of Sioux Preme Packing Co. But Larry is best known as the husband of Sharon and the father of Pat, Mike, Beth, Marty and the late Danny. As Sharon experienced progressive Parkinson’s disease, Larry inspired others with his love and attention until her passing in 2019.

Walsh is devoted to the sanctity of life and to giving back. He has been a long-time member of Heelan’s Legacy Society. He was the voice of Blessed Sacrament Choir for many years. When Sharon needed care at Holy Spirit, he cheered its caregiving staff, and won an award from Holy Spirit Retirement Home.

He has been active and generous with Blessed Sacrament, now Holy Cross Parish, Trinity Heights, Holy Spirit, KFHC Radio and many other Catholic entities.

At Heelan, this ‘51 grad donated a Lady of Guadalupe statue for our Commons, he created Mary’s Place outside and led the charge to create the Crusader Courtyard next to Heelan's fieldhouse.

“Larry has made a difference and is a gift to us and now to all the students who walk through our doors for a Catholic education,” says BHCS President Dr. John Flanery.
