Musicians Perform at Swing Show March 8

Enjoy desserts and great tunes from winning jazz musicians at the annual Heelan Swing Show Friday, March 8 at 7 p m in the Auditorium. The event is free and open to everyone. 

Bishop Heelan Gold and Blues, a 16-member ensemble, earned 1st place at the recent Lewis and Clark Jazz Festival at Western Iowa Tech.  This winter they also enjoyed a 3rd place finish in 3A at the Morningside Jazz Festival and 4th place at District Jazz Band. The Heelan band musicians earned their second consecutive Division 1 rating at IHSMA State Jazz Festival. For the 2nd year in a row, the band has also become Wildcard eligible for the Iowa Jazz Championships.

Bishop Heelan Jazz II - a 14 member ensemble will aslo perform. It includes one 7th grader, seven 8th graders, 2 Freshmen, 2 Sophomores and 2 Juniors. In its first year of existence, Bishop Heelan Jazz II has performed at the Morningside Jazz Festival and placed 3rd at the Lewis and Clark Jazz Festival.  This group of diverse grade levels has grown tremendously in their first year, learning how to play up-tempo swing, slow swing, and a tango.
