Jay Wright, boys assistant basketball coach and member of the Heelan family for many years, has been named new head coach of Heelan girls basketball which won the 3A state championship last year.

Wright takes over for Darron Koolstra who stepped down from coaching because of extensive travel for his job.

This will be the second season for sports in the new O’Gorman Fieldhouse which opened last December.

Wright served as an assistant boys basketball coach for at least 10 years, first under Tom Betz and then Andy Foster. He taught at Heelan from 2004 to 2008, then served as dean of students till 2017, before taking a post as Iowa Regional Coordinator for TeamMates Mentoring.

A fan of sports history, Wright tracks Heelan's athletic records for the school website and created the "Knights of Old" podcast, recorded in KFHC Catholic Radio studio and now in its third season. The show, available through smartphone apps, features interviews with athletes and coaches from a variety of Heelan teams of the past.

Wright and his wife, Christy, ’97 have three sons in the Bishop Heelan system attending Mater Dei School.
