MRHD Awards $100,000 to Heelan Gym

Bishop Heelan has been awarded a $100,000 grant for the new high school gymnasium from the Missouri River Historical Development Inc., (MRHD) The announcement was made at a special ceremony this week attended by BHCS President Dr John Flanery.

Bishop Heelan is completing its $3.8 million capital campaign to build the new 1,600-seat gymnasium. The new gym, still under construction, is expected to open later this fall.

The gym is a major leap forward for students, athletes, the Bishop Heelan community and Siouxland fans, according to Flanery. It represents the final phase of Heelan construction following the opening of the $15 million fine arts building in 2014 and the $12 million academic wing in 2018.

MRHD has awarded $5,000 for school computers and larger awards of $10,000 for band uniforms in 2002 and $100,000 for the Memorial Field track in 2015.

MRHD is the nonprofit group that holds the state gaming license for the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Sioux City. MRHD collects 4.25 percent of the casino post is used as a civic/social center for the small town. 

The grant committee reviewed nearly four dozen grant applications before recommending funding to Heelan and 16 other organizations. The committee’s recommendations are then approved by MRHD’s full board of directors.

Grants are awarded in categories of economic development, education, community improvement, tourism, human services and more.
