Heelan High Students to Wear Neon Green

Heelan Pays Tribute to Isaac Roerig
Posted on 10/14/2020
Bishop Heelan High School students and faculty will wear lime green at school Friday in honor of Isaac Roerig, a 2020 graduate who died unexpectedly last Friday in a traffic accident in Cedar Falls.

Hundreds of t-shirts honoring the Heelan grad have been ordered to raise funds for a scholarship to Heelan. In addition, neon green glasses will be distributed for a freewill donation at the outdoor memorial service Sunday at 1 p.m. at Memorial Field.

Bishop Heelan High School Chaplain Fr. Shane Deman will lead the service. Several of Roerig’s former teachers, classmates and parish pastor will speak. All are welcome and must bring chairs and wear face masks.

The service will be live streamed on the Facebook page for Bishop Heelan Catholic High School for those unable to attend.

Roerig was known for his love of neon green and the green glasses he wore his freshman year and other times. He was in music all four years at Heelan. He was chosen as an all-state vocal music singer at Heelan, performed in the Chorale music group and Harmonia Mundi Show Choir, was band drum major his senior year, a percussionist in the Heelan marching band, and drummer in the jazz band that qualified for state last spring and more.

At UNI Roerig was a freshman in the School of Music and was part of the drumline in the Panther Marching Band.

The Heelan grad is the son of Todd and Susan Roerig and brother to Noah, a marching band musician at South Dakota State University, and Grace, a seventh grader at Mater Dei School. Todd, Heelan’s cross country coach, is on staff at Bishop Heelan High School this year after teaching at Mater Dei School for many years.

“Please keep the entire Roerig family in your prayers as well as our Bishop Heelan community,” BHCS President Dr. John Flanery wrote in an email to Heelan school community.

This is the second fatality in the Heelan class of 2020. Keaton Chicoine, another member of the class, died in a hit-and-run accident just two days before his graduation.
