Heelan started a “Teacher/Staff Member of the Month” program this year to allow students to salute hard-working faculty and staff members. Those honored and nominating students receive front door parking spaces.

In November Juliane Flanery was voted Teacher of the Month. A 1997 Heelan grad and former faculty member at Heelan, she returned this fall to teach theology after living away for many years. She teaches junior theology courses, organized the Homecoming Service Day, and promotes the spiritual growth of her students.

James Kunz, band director, was nominated in October. Kunz, now in his sixth year at Heelan, guided his Marching Band to top No. 1 ratings this fall in state competition. A 2007 Heelan grad, he organized a successful $6,000 mattress fundraiser to benefit the Heelan music department. He has helped Heelan receive new music stands, new marching band uniforms, a new outdoor PA sound system and more.

“We have many programs at Heelan that allow teachers to recognize the achievements of their students,” says Jake Delfs, dean of students. “This gives our students an opportunity to share their voice on the people that matter most to their school experience.”
