Scholarships for students attending Heelan High School continue to grow with the support of alumni.

The Verschoor Annual PRIDE Scholarship, an endowed fund that will live forever, will now be awarded to a deserving Heelan student every year in honor of Jim and Theresa (Bulzak) Verschoor, 1951 graduates.

The couple met at Heelan, where she was class valedictorian and Jim was involved in sports and activities. They raised three children, served on Heelan school boards and committees, and attended football games and activities. Jim ‘51 passed in 2018. Theresa continues to be active.

Grandchildren Joseph ‘16 and Natalie ‘20 Verschoor are graduates and Paulsen ‘24 and John Fey ‘28 currently attend Heelan and Holy Cross.

The Verschoor children Lisa Matney, Jim Verschoor and Susan O’Brien -- all Heelan graduates -- established the award to honor their parent’s commitment to giving their children a faith-based Catholic education. The new $1,000 scholarship will be awarded this spring to a current or transfer student who shows effort in academics and school activities.

Students must apply for merit scholarships by April 1, 2021 through Bob Geary in the Guidance office. Applications are scored by a team of volunteers are scored based on essays, school records and grade point average.
