Online Learning Resources Support Students

Student Learning Alive through Heelan Website
Posted on 03/23/2020
School’s out but learning is on at Bishop Heelan Catholic Schools. School principals, teachers and high school department chairs have created education enrichment activities at bishopheelan.org to keep students engaged in learning while schools are closed. All info is listed under the Tab "Extended School Closure Plan."

Beginning today March 23, every week parents and students will have access to reinforcement, review and enrichment activities to work through at home during the school closure of BHCS.

Teachers submitted material on a shared Google Drive to help build the online learning website.

For grades PK-8 activities are listed for each grade level. Students can click on the grade level or content area’s tab to find activities and information.

At Heelan High School activities are listed under departments of Communication Arts, Fine Arts, Guidance, Life Skills, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Spanish and Theology and Wellness/Nutrition.

In addition every teacher email is listed to allow students and parents to ask questions and interact directly with teachers.

Parents and students began connecting immediately within days of the school shutdown. Although state education leaders announced that students will not be required to make up four weeks of lost classroom time through April 12, a number of BHCS teachers immediately emailed students and each other with education website links and reached out with ideas for lessons and learning.

BHCS parents can feel reassured that teachers have worked hard to stay connected to students, according to John Flanery, BHCS president.

”Teachers worked all week to submit information and suggest lessons to keep learning alive for our students,” says President John Flanery. “Parents who invest in a BHCS faith-based education expect a focus on academic excellence and we are working to continue to deliver. While our teachers do not have a classroom, they have used their expertise to share resources and tools to help keep learning going on our website.”

“We are leveraging all of our resources to engage our students in a virtual learning environment until we resume classes,” Flanery says. “I’m extremely proud of the efforts of our teachers, Jenny Pattee our curriculum director and our education technology specialists Cindy Spenner and Jacque Yaneff. It’s truly been a team effort.”
