Volunteer Couple to be Honored

Shoemakers are Volunteers of the Year
Posted on 05/29/2021
The Distinguished Volunteer of the Year Award for 2021 goes to Sid and Linda Shoemaker who have been volunteer fixtures at Heelan football games and champions for our Catholic schools.

In search for a good cup of hot coffee, Sid gathered a team of dedicated volunteers and developed a process to serve hot chocolate and coffee at Memorial Field for the past 11 years. They have continued volunteering 9 years after their last child graduated from Heelan. Their three Heelan grad children are Jessica, Dylan and Chase.

As a CPA, Linda has been a true Crusader for Sioux City Catholic schools and educated clients on the Monsignor Lafferty Tuition Foundation. In fact, gifts from the Shoemakers and her clients have enabled hundreds of students to attend our Catholic schools.

A 1981 graduate, Linda has lived the Bishop Heelan mission of serving others. She has served on the board of Catholic Charities, the Bishop Heelan Schools finance committee and committees to address hardship requests from families in our system.

During COVID isolation last year, Linda led the charge for a phone outreach team to check on Mater Dei parish members.

Sid has also lived the mission of service. He has served on the Bishop Heelan school board and the board of Catholic radio KFHC, and has been active with Men’s Bible study and Mater Dei Parish.

With the Knights of Columbus he served the homeless on cold nights last year when the Warming Shelter closed. He co-founded the Angel Car program, in conjunction with Community Action Agency of Siouxland, to repair and donate vehicles to working single parents.

”We thank Sid and Linda for making a difference at Bishop Heelan Catholic Schools and in our Sioux City Catholic community,” says BHCs President Dr. John Flanery.
