President's Updates

Message from the President- March 20, 2020

Bishop Heelan Catholic Schools families, faculty, staff, and friends,

Each passing day brings new information and concerns. Thankfully as I type this message there has still not been a confirmed case of COVID-19 in our tri-state county area.  We certainly hope it will remain as such. As promised here are some updates for you all:

  • Our principals and administration staff members have developed a plan for academic reinforcement and enrichment for our students.  You can find this on our website’s home page under the heading, “Extended School Closure Plan”. Currently our faculty are working quickly to provide online options for your children. Some of our delay in presenting this has come from our efforts to systemically offer the same engagement to all of our students regardless of which building they attend and which teacher they have in class. Hence, I do believe that the comprehensive nature of these options will benefit all students optimally.

  • We have developed a landing page on our website which will include all past correspondence regarding the coronavirus and our communication with you.  This should compile substantial amounts of information for you in one location. That link is found HERE:

  • A reminder that our Administration office is still open even though our schools are closed. We are located at 50 13th street and can be reached at 712-252-1350 from 8 a.m. till 4:30 p.m. If you would like to meet with a staff member please call to set that appointment.

  • Our Online Registration and TADs (tuition assistance) application for all returning families is still due by April 1. We were hopeful that this deadline could be extended; however, the Diocese needs our TADs completed by that date to determine financial assistance from Monsignor Lafferty Tuition Fund and Bishop’s Scholarship Fund for all Diocesan schools. As indicated above we can help you with submitting your application. Again please contact us to set up an appointment.

  • As of now we are still hoping to return to school on Monday, April 13. We do ask that if you are planning air travel or significant out-of-the-area travel (especially to a location with diagnosed cases of COVID-19) that you understand the need to quarantine you and your family for 14 days upon return, which could impact your child’s ability to attend school. Please contact our office with further questions.

  • You’ve received information regarding a social/emotional and mental health initiative led by our counseling staff.  We’ve established a way for you to receive support, information and help by creating a confidential email account for you -- WeCare@bishopheelan.org.  Email your questions and concerns to this address and our counseling team will respond by phone or email as quickly as possible. Our team of school counselors and individuals have training and expertise in social work, counseling, child and adolescent development and behavior to help you and your children cope with anxiety and other stressful feelings.

  • Fr. Shane Deman, chaplain at Bishop Heelan High School, is broadcasting daily Mass live on the Bishop Heelan High School Facebook page, every weekday at 7 a.m. and on Saturday at 8 a.m. Local Catholic radio will offer video broadcast of daily Mass each morning at 7:00 am at the following site: https://www.fhcradio.com.

  • Bishop Heelan High School and many other organizations have cancelled spring blood drives, adding to the concerns of available blood. Please consider donating blood to help those in need at the LifeServe Blood Center at 4501 Sergeant Road.

I ask for your continued cooperation with the recommended government/CDC safety precautions to curb the spread of this awful illness: wash hands often, cover coughs and sneezes, stay home, be extra careful if you show symptoms and practice social distancing.

Please know of our continued efforts every day to propel us forward. We pray that our system will return to classes, friends and faith formation again very soon.

John Flanery
President, Bishop Heelan Catholic Schools
